Light It Like Jeff: Dramatic Background Using 2 V-Flats | Ep 13
In this episode, Jeff shows us how to create a moody, dramatic portrait background using just three lights, two V-Flats, and creative lighting techniques. Working with model Cheryl in the studio, Jeff showcases how these simple tools can elevate the depth and atmosphere of your portraits.
The Basic Setup
Jeff begins with a three-light setup to achieve the dramatic effect. The key light is a B10 with a beauty dish and a grid, angled down toward Cheryl. He explains the use of the grid, stating, “I’ve got the grid because I don’t want a bunch of light shooting everywhere.” He carefully positions the light and guides Cheryl on how to face it for optimal results.
Behind Cheryl, Jeff places a B1 fitted with a blue gel on a 40-degree grid. This light illuminates the black V-Flat behind Cheryl, creating a blue halo effect. To complete the setup, Jeff uses a third light – a B10 with a lighter blue gel – to kick light into a white V-Flat, adding a soft rim light around Cheryl’s body.
Creating the Blue Background
To add drama to the background, Jeff employs a clever technique using a V-Flat and colored light. “I just kind of wanted a cool blue theme with this,” he says.
"Right behind her, kind of over her head, I've got a B1 with a blue gel on a 40-degree grid that is just shining some light onto this V-Flat here," he explains.
The black side of the V-Flat absorbs most of the light, creating a deep, saturated blue color. "What that's doing is that's just going to hit the black background, the black V-Flat, and that's going to just create a nice halo of blue around her head."
Adding Rim Light
To further separate the subject from the background, Jeff introduces a rim light. "Behind that, I've got another V-Flat on the white side kind of wrapping around with another B10 and just a lighter blue gel," he describes.
This technique creates a subtle highlight around the subject, adding depth to the image.
Jeff explains his color choice, "Basically, I've got the blue background, just a lighter blue kicker. That way it's not, you know, we're not throwing a bunch of different crazy colors in there. I just kind of wanted a kind of cool blue theme with this."
Atmospheric Effects
To complete the look, Jeff brings out one last trick – atmosphere aerosol, or "fog in a can." He sprays it around Cheryl to add depth and texture to the background. "It just kind of adds a little atmosphere, as the name tells us, and a little bit of depth."
Fine-Tuning the Shot
With all the elements in place, Jeff shoots from a low angle to create even more drama in the final image. He tweaks the lights and directs Cheryl’s pose until everything looks just right. The result? A striking portrait with layers of color, light, and texture.
