Article: Shaping Light Using V-Flats with Dani Diamond

Shaping Light Using V-Flats with Dani Diamond

Lighting is everything in photography, and sometimes, the simplest tools can create the most stunning effects. In this blog, we’re breaking down a clever lighting trick using just two V-Flats, a single bare bulb flash, and a reflector – taught by none other than Dani Diamond!

The Setup

For this technique, we’re using:

✅ One light source – A bare bulb flash with a reflector
✅ Two V-Flats – Positioned to shape the light into a focused beam
A narrow gap – Just a few inches between the V-Flats to control light spill

By carefully placing the V-Flats close together, we create a narrow passage for the light, directing it into a beautiful, controlled streak. This technique allows the light to hit the background in a unique way, creating a dramatic effect that draws the viewer’s eye straight to the subject.

Why This Works

V-Flats are often used for bouncing and diffusing light, but here, they act as light shapers – guiding and focusing the flash into a precise beam. This adds contrast, mood, and a professional touch to portraits without requiring complex gear.

Pro Tip from Dani

Want to refine the streak even more? Adjust the gap between the V-Flats. A smaller gap creates a sharper, more defined beam, while a wider opening softens the effect. Experiment with positioning and shaping light to get the perfect look for your shoot!
