Street Studio: The Halloween Project | EP 7 | Felix Kunze

In this episode of Street Studio, Felix Kunze, a master portrait photographer, brings his unique Halloween tradition to life on the streets of SoHo, New York. Every Halloween, Felix and his crew hit the pavement to photograph strangers in their festive costumes for his Halloween Project, and this year marks the fifth installment of the tradition. With cameras rolling to document his creative process, Felix sets out to capture the unique spirit of the holiday.

The Halloween Project Begins

As Halloween night kicks off, Felix is armed with his camera and a V-Flat. The streets are buzzing with a mix of costumes and energy. Felix approaches people with a simple request: “Can I take your picture?” and his relaxed style makes it easy for strangers to join in.

Once he gets them in front of the camera, he directs them with straightforward poses, like tilting their heads or striking a fun pose. This approach helps him get the best shots while keeping the atmosphere relaxed.

V-Flats on the Street

This year, for the first time on his Halloween Project, Felix uses a V-Flat to control shadows and enhance lighting. By bouncing light off the panels, he creates a more dynamic and studio-like environment right on the street. Felix explains that this technique allows for better shadow control, giving his portraits a polished, professional look without the need for elaborate setups.

He highlights how these tools make it easier to achieve great results in outdoor settings, especially with unpredictable lighting conditions at night. The V-Flat not only improves the quality of his images but also allows him to maintain his quick shooting style. As Felix points out, it’s like having two light sources without needing anyone to hold one.

Community and Connection

As the night comes to a close, Felix reflects on his experiences. “It’s been a different kind of night,” he says, pleased with how the V-Flats have enhanced his work.

Felix’s Halloween Project continues to evolve, blending his love for photography with the joy of community. This episode of Street Studio perfectly captures the fun and creativity of Halloween, reminding us all of the magic that comes from connecting with others, one costume at a time.
