How to Use a V-Flat for Portrait Lighting

A V-Flat is a hinged panel used to control light around a subject. V-Flat World's Foldable V-Flat 2.0 has white and black surfaces: the white side bounces light, while the black side helps reduce reflected fill or block unwanted spill. It works with window light, flash and continuous lighting.

Use white for fill light

Start with your main light or a window to one side of the subject. Place the V-Flat's white side near the opposite side, outside the camera frame. Compare the shadows with and without the panel. Move it closer for a stronger effect or farther away for less fill, and adjust its angle to direct reflected light where you need it.

Use black for negative fill

In a bright room, walls and other surfaces can bounce light into the subject's shadows. Place the black side near the shadow side to reduce some of that fill and add definition. Make a reference photograph before adding the panel so you can see the change. The effect depends on the room, light and distance from the subject.

Use a panel to flag spill

A flag blocks light from reaching an area. Place the panel between the source and the part of the set you want to shade. Check the camera view and subject after each movement so the panel stays outside the frame and does not block light you want to keep.

Choose one V-Flat or a pair

One V-Flat lets you add fill, create negative fill or flag a source in a simple setup. A set of two lets you control different sides independently. For example, use white on one side to bounce light and black on another to limit room reflections. Start with one change at a time so each panel has a clear job.

Plan for transport and working space

Each side of the Foldable V-Flat 2.0 measures 40 x 80 inches. Each unit folds to 40 x 40 x 2 inches and weighs 12 lb. Check doorways, transport space and the room around the subject before choosing your setup. The 2.0 model uses magnetic flap closures and protective U-channel edging.

A V-Flat modifies an existing light source; it does not need electrical power. Its white or black surface can also serve as a background when the camera framing and lighting suit it.
