Get Fail-Proof Catalog Images | Dani Diamond

Ever wonder how professional photographers get those crisp, consistent catalog images that make clients swoon? Photography pro Dani Diamond has cracked the code with a surprisingly simple setup that delivers fail-proof results using just a few key pieces of equipment – and he's spilling all the secrets.

In this video, Dani shows us a straightforward approach that relies on simplicity and consistency, making sure every image hits the mark for his clients. Here's how he makes it work using V-Flats, and how anyone can apply these principles for standout catalog photos.

The Power of the Two-Light Setup

Dani starts with a two-light setup to maintain consistency in every shot. His key light is positioned at the side, giving his model, Adriana, a striking, directional light that sculpts her features. This creates dimension without overpowering the shot. A fill light above Dani's head softens any harsh shadows on the model, giving a balanced, polished look every time.

To create depth and ensure controlled shadows, he uses two V-Flats: a white one at the back and a black one folded in half at the front. This combination helps him manage reflections and shadows, resulting in a perfectly balanced scene. By bouncing the key light off the white V-Flat, Dani softens shadows and adds depth to the background, while the black V-Flat ensures subtle shadow on the model’s face, adding texture and dimension without overdoing it.

Dani's Pro Tips for Consistent Results

For smooth operation and instant client feedback, Dani uses a CamRanger, which connects to his Sony A1 and sends images wirelessly to an iPad. This allows his clients to see shots in real-time, keeping everyone on the same page. When it comes to lenses, he opts for the versatile 24-70mm f/2.8, allowing him to capture wide and tight shots without switching lenses.

But the real secret isn't in the gear – it's in the workflow. Here are his top tips for nailing every shot:

  • Set up your lights once and forget about them – consistency is key
  • Use manual white balance calibrated with a gray card to ensure accurate colors
  • Start with lights at 1/16 power and adjust from there
  • Keep your basic settings around 1/250th shutter speed, f/4.5, and ISO 160
  • Don't stress about copying exact settings – adjust until the results look right to you

Consistency Is Key for Catalog Success

What makes this setup a game-changer for professional e-commerce fashion shoots is its reliability. Once everything's in place, photographers can focus entirely on directing the model and capturing great poses, knowing that every shot will have that clean, professional catalog look clients love. Plus, the consistent lighting means less time spent editing and more happy clients reviewing perfect shots on an iPad during the session.

Whether you're shooting fashion, products, or portraits, this V-Flat setup might just become your new studio staple. After all, as Dani says, having an easy, reliable setup that works every time is what professional photography is all about.
