Using Natural Light for Perfect Results | The Light Cone
Karl Taylor shows us how to use a Light Cone to make photos look better, even with natural light. The Light Cone was designed by Karl to help control and direct light to enhance product photos. Usually, it's used with studio lights, but Karl demonstrates that it can work with natural light too.
Using The Light Cone in Natural Light
While the Light Cone can be used with different types of lights like studio lights, LEDs, and desk lamps, it also works well with natural light. Karl shows this by using a smartphone and a Light Cone phone version, set up outside.
By placing the Light Cone correctly, he improves the natural light on the product. The Cone helps the light spread more evenly and reduces harsh shadows, making the product look better in the final photo.
Benefits of the Light Cone
Using the Light Cone with natural light has several benefits:
- Softens Light: It makes the natural light softer, so there are fewer harsh shadows. This creates a more even light on the product.
- Focuses Light: The Light Cone helps direct the light onto the product, highlighting the important parts and reducing light in the background.
- Consistency: The Light Cone helps keep the light consistent, even if the natural light changes a bit, like when clouds move. This is important for taking multiple photos that look the same.
- Flexibility: Karl shows that you can use the Light Cone with a smartphone, making it easy for anyone to use, not just professional photographers.
Simple Natural Light Product Photography
Karl shows us that even simple setups can look professional. The Light Cone is an amazing tool to help control, soften, and direct light, making product photos look much better. This makes it a handy tool for photographers in any lighting condition.

Haa, I have been shooting an olive and rose gold fountain pen and seem to be finding that the rose gold plays really well in natural light vs studio lights. In fact today my plan was to take the product and my light cone outside for a field trip but we have had nothing but rain all day. Totally agree the light cone is fantastic in natural light!!
